THE PATH FORWARD

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

January 6th, 2020 will go down as a dark day for American democracy. Yesterday’s violent insurrection inside the Capitol was caused by President Trump and stoked by seditious Republican members of Congress.

For four years, Trump and his GOP have attacked our democratic institutions and divided Americans for political gain. In the November election, voters mandated that Joe Biden will be our 46th U.S. President. Rejecting the will of the people is an attack on democracy and the U.S. Constitution.

South Carolina Republicans, including Representatives Joe Wilson, Jeff Duncan, Ralph Norman, and William Timmons, gave the terrorists what they wanted by voting to reject electors. Justice, history, and South Carolina voters will hold them accountable.

At 3:41 AM today, the will of the American people prevailed. Congress certified President-elect Biden’s victory. In two weeks, the Biden-Harris Administration will begin the necessary work of healing the soul of our nation.

The path forward must be the restoration of democracy, decency, and respect. We must elect leaders with the courage to stand up for the American people -- not their own political interests. We must show the world that American is better than yesterday’s chaos at the Capitol.

I have faith we will confront this dark chapter, preserve American democracy, and continue the struggle for progress. Together, we will bring hope back to our state and nation.
